We all agree, that a workers ability to recognize a hazard(s) is a foundational to the development and implementation of a control(s) strategy. The Construction Industry Institute (CII) RT 293 has determined that workers are only able to recognize 45% of the hazards they encounter during a work day. “Is this due to poor training, a lack of experience, or miscommunication? Is it caused by changes in conditions, inattention, or are there other limitations? (Bilotto)”
This month, we are excited to have Matt Breuer and Gary Johnson, of Brand Safway share a revolutionary approach to work planning, including case studies. This approach incorporates an energy disk, which is based upon hazardous energy sources suggested by Fleming (2008) in which all safety hazards are linked to the potential release of specific energy. The energy wheel incorporates mnemonics that aids in the instruction and recognition of hazards. The CII RT 293 research has revealed overall improvement of hazard recognition skills of 30% when the energy wheel is incorporated into pre-task planning.
